Using Heat and Ice on Sore Muscles

!±8± Using Heat and Ice on Sore Muscles

Sooner or later everyone is going to work out a little too hard or strain a muscle playing basketball and the next morning you wake up in some serious pain due to sore muscles. Sure, you can just take some ibuprofen, but that's just going to treat the symptoms. How about a natural remedy that will actually take care of the problem?

The answer is applying a combination of heat and ice at separate times. Both of these work well individually, and we'll cover what they do, but together they work very well and will intensify the effect of the other. Let's take a look at what they do.

Ice is the first thing you should apply to nearly any injury - sore muscles, shin splints, sprained ankles, etc. Putting ice on the sore area does several things. First off, it numbs the area gently and acts as a natural anesthetic - definitely a plus when your muscles are really burning. Second, putting ice on the area slows the flow of fluid to the area, allowing it to heal more quickly.

Applying heat to the sore area does a couple of things as well. The heat will allow tight muscles to relax, easing the sore feeling you have, and it will also increase blood flow to the area, bringing extra nutrients and speeding up the healing process.

Remember those two things the next time you work out too hard or twist your ankle, and you'll be feeling better in record time.
